The Crucifix of San Damiano

Floral banner

The San Damiano Cross is the one St. Francis was praying before when he received the commission from the Lord to rebuild the Church of San Damiano.

"Go Francis, and repair my Church which, as you see is falling into ruin"

In Holy Week of 1957, it was placed on public view for the first time, over the new Altar in San Giorgio's Chapel, in the Basilica of St Clare in Assisi.

The Crucifix of San Damiano
The prayer of St. Francis before this crucifix:

All-highest, Glorious God,
cast your light into the darkness of my heart.
Give me right faith,
firm hope,
perfect charity,
and profound humility,
with wisdom and perception,
o Lord, so that I may do
what is truly your holy will.

Amen
