Foggia the Capital of the Province is a renowned and pleasant
medieval town at a height of 556 mt on the side of a hill set
in the headland of the Gargano, a mountain which plunges into
the Adriatic. It is famous for its connection with Padre Pio
da Pietrelcina and for the "Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza"
(The Home for the Relief of Suffering), which was built to modern
standards thanks to the many donations from all over the world.
Other buildings of note are: the Battistero of San Giovanni
which gets the second part of its name from its round shape;
and the church of Sant'Onofrio dating back to the XIII century.
The Friary of Our Lady of Grace, where Padre Pio lived, and
the Chapel of the Virgin of Loreto are the sacred buildings
most visited by pilgrims throughout the year.
The town, which is also renowned as a Spa, has good accommodation
facilities: hotels and inns. The nearest railway station is
in Manfredonia 23 km away. |
